Information circles: Art and artists, Cultures Around the World, and Geology
We continue to work in our information circles, students are working on analytic reading, and applying what they are learning to ask and answer questions. For example, the art and artists research group asked this week, 'How does art affect how we see the world?'
Students spent the week reading through their text collections with that question in mind, taking notes on ideas that would help them establish and support their view, and discussing in ideas with their group.
The question the geology group chose was, 'How do volcanoes form?'; and the Cultures Around the World Group chose, 'What are the cultural differences between Mexico and Spain?' We are still working on using our own words to rephrase information we've learned.
Next week: Creating our own Fairy Tales!
We wrapped up our fairy tale adaptions this week, and the students are excited to move into creating original fairy tales. Here is a fun adaptation of The Three Little Pigs called, 'The Three Little Jaguars' by Jack.
We are so excited to present our inaugural #GlobalLearningBig Day on Wednesday, May 16! #GlobalLearningBigDay is an our interpretation of an online STEM 'conference' for kids to teach and learn from each other. Each student will present a skill, and the event will air on our YouTubeChannel. We are very excited to have students from Roosevelt participating in this event, also; and we hope kids around the world can learn with us!
Some presentations we have planned are:
- Making a Kahoot! for Beginners
- Getting Started with Tynker
- Make an Awesome Presentation with Keynote
- What is a Native Garden, and Why are they Important?
See our Events page for a list of accepted presentations, and our #GlobalLearningBigDay website for more information.
Math: How many miles? Addition, Subtraction, and the number System
As we move into our final unit of the year, I am excited to say that these students are developing excellent mathematical thinking and number sense. Math is always one of our favorite times of the day. We took our time moving through the rather difficult fractions unit, and we will begin exploring (and reviewing) some of the following ideas this week:
