Third Grade Curriculum Overview

We use Google Classroom!  All student assignments, communications, and work will be organized on this web-based platform. Students will use Seesaw to communicate and share work with parents.  

Math

Mathematics instruction is based upon the the inquiry-based curriculum Investigations.  In our classroom, there will be a heavy emphasis on authentic problem-solving, developing reasoning skills, communication, and developing fluency and proficiency through emphasis on the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

English Language Arts

The 3rd Grade English Language Arts curriculum focuses on resources from Harcourt/Houghton Mifflin Journeys, Units of Study (writing), and other high-quality resources.  We spend much time investigating literature and informational texts via collaborative literature circles and information circles.

Our social studies curriculum uses a variety of authentic resources, including Houghton Mifflin's Communities text.

Science

Our areas of study in third grade include forces and interactions, ecosystems, weather and climates, engineering, plants and animals (life cycle, heredity and traits),   Our classroom will use a variety of resources, including ​Project Lead the Way Launch.

Developing proper social skills is integral to childhood development.  To learn and practice our social skills, we use ​Second Step..

Project-based and Inquiry-based Learning

Students in our classroom will have the opportunity to explore a variety of different learning experiences through project-based and inquiry-based learning.  Students will work on developing, supporting, and researching essential questions to solve problems and create solutions.  Some areas for learning this year:
  • Coding, robotics, and engineering (using tools like Wonder Workshop's Dash and Dot, littleBits, Flybrix drone, and Sphero SPRK+)
  • Habitats and ecosystems support and management (care, planning, communication, and community outreach for the Lincoln School Native Garden)
  • Media and communication (global connections, podcasting, videos, and newsletter production)
  • other ideas based upon student interest
